How Do You Keep Going When Life Keeps Knocking You Down?

Last week I wrote about resilience and shared a few practical tips on how you can strengthen your ability to bounce back from life’s challenges. Maybe you’ve wondered if I’ve personally used these techniques and if they actually work.

The answer? A resounding YES!

Not only have I used these strategies, but they’ve helped me get through some of the most difficult moments of my life. Want to know how resilience has shown up for me? Here are just a few examples:

Examples of Overcoming Obstacles

  1. In my early 20s, I was in a major car accident that left both of my kneecaps shattered. Three surgeries and 18 months of rehab later, I learned to walk again.

  2. I survived a painful divorce after experiencing an abusive marriage.

  3. I’ve navigated the heartbreaking experience of parental alienation from one of my children.

  4. I underwent a full knee replacement and came back stronger.

  5. I broke my left ankle, which meant more surgery and—yes—more rehab.

  6. I walked the emotional tightrope of having a son deployed for a year in Afghanistan.

  7. I lost a few jobs along the way.

  8. Most recently, I broke my right arm (my dominant arm!) in two places—again requiring surgery and extensive recovery.

Now, I’m not sharing this to earn sympathy. I’m sharing it because I know what it feels like when life knocks the wind out of you. I’ve had days when the idea of “bouncing back” felt impossible. I’ve struggled with mindset. I’ve questioned everything. And through it all, I kept coming back to the tools that helped me stay grounded.

But I left out one of the most important tools of all - my faith!

Without my faith, I’m not sure I would have made it through half of those challenges. My faith has been my North Star—guiding me back to strength, purpose, and clarity when everything felt like it was falling apart.

Your North Star might be God, Allah, Buddha, the universe, or simply your unwavering belief in something greater than yourself. Whatever it is, lean into it. Let it steady you.

And if you’re in the middle of one of life’s storms and don’t know where to turn—please know this: You don’t have to go through it alone. I’m here, and I can help.

I’m thrilled to announce I’ll be co-hosting a free Meetup event titled, “Divorce: How to Get from Pain to Purpose”. The event will be held on Saturday, April 26th at 8:00 am PST. This is a safe, supportive space for anyone navigating the end of a marriage and wondering, What’s next?

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support means the world to me!
